Emenike Bags Two Goals For Eagles Giving them a Boost On The Way To Brazil
The Super Eagles have one leg in Brazil for the World Cup courtesy of two goals from Emmanuel Emenike. But they had to do it the hard way – coming from a goal down.
The Eagles were unchanged from the side that started their last World Cup qualifier against Malawi in Calabar in September with Nnamdi Oduamadi playing in the hole behind Emenike.
The Ethiopians had 61% of possession in the first half and had their chances and thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute when Saladin Saif knocked the ball past Vincent Enyeama but Godfrey Oboabona made a timely clearance.
The second half came to life in the 56th minute when Enyeama was penalised for catching the ball behind the line according to the Cameroonian referee. Victor Moses should have equalised in the 62nd minute. Nosa Igiebor replaced Nnamdi Oduamadi and Brown Ideye replaced Victor Moses.
Emenike equalised in the 67th with a terrific shot from outside the box. Ahmed Musa should have scored in the 77th minute but his shot hit the post.
Emenike got his second goal and the winning goal in the 89th minute from the penalty spot after he was pulled down in the box. Nigeria held on to win 2-1. The second leg is slated for the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar on November 16.
